Tanishi is from the Genjutsu Tree Village and lives with his mother. His village is a Hidden Village because it has a Genjutsu-like effect around the area, which makes it hard for anyone to find the village. The villagers use the chilly paper bomb to counter the Genjutsu effect.
He is one of the supporting characters in the Naruto anime series and manga that was written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto.

Tanishi was born in the Genjutsu Tree Village and lived with his parents, but one day, Kandachi (who was the right hand of Hanzo before his death) and his men came to the village and told the villagers that they would rule them. But Tanishi’s father, Sukune, resisted them and tried to fight them alone, but Kandachi was able to defeat him easily and killed him.
Tanishi thought his father was foolish to fight against the shinobi, and after his father's death, Kandachi took all the women and children hostage and told all the men that if they let any other shinobi inside the village or tell them anything about the situation, he will kill the women and children.
Sometime later, Jiraya and Naruto Uzumaki came to the Genjutsu Tree Village when Jiraya was teaching Naruto about genjutsu and how to counter it. When they both reached the gate of the village, Tanishi shot a chilly pepper bomb and told them to get away. Jiraya recognized him by his birthmark and asked them about the situation and why he was stopping them.
Tanishi did not tell them why and told them to go away. Later, when Tanishi went to his house, Jiraya and Naruto sneaked inside and Jiraya threatened him. Tanishi told him that he would tell them about the situation and what Kandachi did.
Jiraya put Tanishi to sleep and then made Naruto use a transformation technique to turn into Tanishi's clone. As the Tanishi clone, Naruto then went to see Kandachi and showed him that he had captured Jiraya.
The real Tanishi appeared and revealed that Naruto was the one who transformed into his clone, and that made Kandachi upset. He said that he would kill all the women and children there, but somehow Jiraya and Naruto saved them and told Tanishi to take them away from the area.
When Tanishi went back to check on Jiraya and Naruto, he saw that they both were stuck under genjutsu, which Kandachi used, and then Tanishi used his Pepper bomb to wake them from the genjutsu. Naruto used Giant Rasengan to defeat Kandachi and later Tanishi, with all the villagers giving their gratitude to Sukune for his sacrifice.
At first, Tanishi was a scared young boy who used to think that courage was foolish because his father showed courage and died. But after he meets Naruto and sees him fighting, he gains confidence and shows courage against Kandachi.
Tanishi has brown eyes and purple hair. He has a red band on his forehead, and just beneath that, he has a birthmark which is like a small dot. He wears a green shirt, and over that, a dark green vest.
Tanishi could accurately shoot chilly pepper bombs from his slingshot. He is much stronger than normal young boys.
