PRESENTED BY HOUSTON -- Former Florida State assistant coach Ronald Hughey will become the next head coach of Houston, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Mack Rhoades announced on Monday evening. Hughey will be introduced at a press conference on Tuesday. Hughey will become the seventh head coach in program history. He comes to Houston as one of the rising stars in the industry and is regarded as one of the top assistants in the game, as he has been on six consecutive NCAA tournament coaching staffs with four different schools in Florida State, Texas, Rutgers and UCF. In all, he has helped lead five schools to seven postseason appearances in 10 years as a Division I coach. “As we went through this coaching search, we spoke with many different people who knew Hughey well, on and off the court," Rhoades said. "Coach Hughey’s energy, excitement, and commitment to his student-athletes were apparent from our very first meeting. He is one of the rising stars in this industry and we’re excited to have him join our University of Houston Athletics family” A Columbia, S.C., native, Hughey has made stops at four power conferences, including the SEC, Big East, Big 12 and ACC, while he spent the 2008-09 campaign coaching against Houston in Conference USA as an assistant coach at UCF. While at Texas he helped land the nation’s No. 10 recruiting class in 2011 and the country’s 13th strongest class in 2012. He kept his magic working at Florida State, as he helped the Seminoles haul in the nation’s 11th-ranked class in 2013. Hughey has been taught by some of the best coaches the sport of women’s basketball has to offer, including serving as an assistant under legendary Rutgers head coach C. Vivian Stringer.
