An anti-climatic end to a game. It wasn't the most clinical of run chases from England but they've bagged the two points to start their tournament with a win. It was the bowlers who led the way with a lethal performance in the first innings, bundling out Afghanistan for a miserly total.
In reply, it wasn't textbook from England. In fact, it was far from it. The expectations for them would have been to wrap this up quickly as they did in their tournament opener against Australia last year, giving their net run rate a significant boost which eventually helped them progress into the next round. It wasn't the same today though and the Afghanistan bowlers deserve some credit for that.
Labored starts from Buttler and Hales never really lit the stage on fire for England up top and neither did Malan or Stokes. Afghanistan kept it tight from the start but always seemed out of this game because of the underpar total they put on the board. In all fairness though, the difference between the two sides on the day was their fielding.
England grabbed onto almost every chance that came their way which resulted in a triggering a Afghanistan collapse. Nabi's side some chances of their own and had they taken those, things might have been a bit different. Plenty of positives to take for both sides but it's England who take the two points. Stick around to hear what the captains what to say. 18.2 Azmatullah Omarzai to Moeen Ali, WIDE! THAT'S IT! Not the ideal way to end the game but England will take it. Bangs in the short delivery on the outside off, goes well over the batter's head and it's called a wide. England took time to get there but they did eventually, that's what matters! 18.1 Azmatullah Omarzai to Liam Livingstone, short delivery into Livingstone, he skips down the track for the glory shot as he mistimes the pull to deep backward square-leg for one. Scores are level! Azmatullah Omarzai [1.0-0-9-0] is back into the attack England have managed to tip-toe close to the finish line. It seemed like this was a target they could have cruised through to finish things off quickly but it wasn't the case. Some might view it as a chance missed to improve their net run rate. 18 2 1 2 0 0 2 17.6 Mohammad Nabi to Moeen Ali, length delivery on the leg-stump, Moeen hoicks it past the square-leg, they sprint back for another brace. Just 2 runs away now England! 17.5 Mohammad Nabi to Moeen Ali, short and angles into Moeen on the outside off, hangs back and stabs it gently into the off-side. 17.4 Mohammad Nabi to Moeen Ali, slides the length delivery into Moeen, misses to clip, that thuds on the pad as it nipped back into him sharply. England are one hit away. Can they wrap it up in this over? 17.3 Mohammad Nabi to Moeen Ali, short on the outside off, Moeen stood tall and punched it through extra-cover and in the gap as they hare back for the brace. Just 4 needed now! 17.2 Mohammad Nabi to Liam Livingstone, drops it short, shaping in on the fourth stump, Livingstone almost dragged it back on as he gets the inside edge past the off-stump for a single. 17.1 Mohammad Nabi to Liam Livingstone, DROPPED! If only Afghanistan had held on to their catches. Length delivery on the outside off, shaping away as Livingstone chips it straight to short extra-cover who shells a sitter as they come back for a brace. Mohammad Nabi [2.0-0-9-1] is back into the attack Fazhalhaq Farooqi wraps up his spell with figures of 1/24. In the grand scheme of things, it might not count for much but the Afghan bowlers have done really well tonight. 17 1 1 1 0 1 0 Wanna suggest something? Power through the road less

The commentary is not available for this match. Please check the scorecard for latest updates. Right then. Day one of the Super 12s lived up to the billing, starting off with New Zealand getting a massive result against the defending champions. In the second game, England have managed to get over the finish line against Afghanistan that put up a decent fight. The two results will break this group open quite nicely, which only promises more excitement for the neutral. Tomorrow, it's another double header with the headline clash as India take on Pakistan. Of course, we'll be here to bring all the action from that one. For now, this is Pratyush Rohra, signing off on behalf of my partner, Pradeep Somashekar. Thank you for joining our coverage. See ya! Jos Buttler (Captain, England): It's always nerves in the first game, we've been playing a lot of cricket up until the first ball, there's always anticipation but excited to get the win on board. Big grounds here, guys are putting a lot of effort to take great catches, one of the better one's yea, Mark Wood is fun to keep wicket too, delighted to hang on to that one. Wood is very vital, that pace and he's had a bit of time out with the injury, he's been fit before that, he's a great asset, he's in a good space, hopefully he keeps performing for us. Curran has got great character, he thrives under pressure, great attitude to have, most pleasing thing about Sam is, he always wants to grow. (Chasing in the first game, about nerves) Bit of all of that, ball swung early, against a talented bowling attack, it wasn't easy, had to pay respect to the bowlers, we tried to blast our way through and ended up being two or three down, added a lot of pressure on us, could've been more fluent but Afghanistan bowled really well. Mohammad Nabi (Afghanistan captain): It's not a great start to the tournament but we tried our best. We didn't put up a good total on the board. Everyone knows England are one of the best T20 sides in the world. They played well against Pakistan and Australia recently. The boys played really well but our batting let us down. They (England) took 2-3 good catches. (Collapse at the end proving to be costly?) We were thinking 145-150 would be a good total to put up a fight but we didn't get those runs in the end. (Spinners performance) If we can get some good totals on the board, we have enough quality spinners who have enough experience in Australia and can make a game out of that. We learn from our mistakes and we hope to improve on that in the next game. Sam Curran has been adjudged the Player of the Match for his splendid bowling effort that set up the game for England! Here's what he has to say: I think we saw the Afghanistan made it tricky in the end, world class spinners but it's nice to get the first victory under our belt. Every team is dangerous, it's all about taking one game at a time, we're looking forward to that Australia game on Friday. We've had good preparations, warm-up game against Pakistan, another tricky game coming up against Ireland. For me, I try to adapt as possible, doesn't matter whether it's inside the powerplay or middle period or at the death, just want to keep contributing, really enjoying my cricket at the moment. England won by 5 wickets!Liam Livingstone - 29 (21) Sam Curran 5/10
