It turned out to be a one-sided tussle in the end as Sri Lanka dismantled Ireland in the opening match of today's double-header. Right then! Now the attention shifts to the iconic MCG as India and Pakistan are gearing up to battle it out in front of a packed stadium. The atmosphere has already been so electric, and let's hope the contest lives up to the expectations of the millions. Do catch all the LIVE updates , and now it's time to end the coverage as this is Pragadeesh and Pradeep signing off. Dasun Shanaka (Sri Lanka Captain): Yeah I am really happy with the way we played. Each and everyone contributed really well. We knew coming into this match that spinners will play a vital role. (On Kusal Mendis) I think he's been playing consistently for years and he plays according to the situation - That's a key to his success. Death bowling is the key area and today it came off well and going forward it will be better too. I thank the Sri Lankan crowd for coming in at good numbers to support us Andy Balbirnie (Ireland Captain): We knew Sri Lanka will be a big threat with the ball, there wasn't a lot of spin but just enough to threaten us, disappointed with the bat, we were well short of runs. We knew that there was threat with the Sri Lankan bowlers, certainly doesn't look like it now, we need to back ourselves to do well and put up a better fight in the next game. Tector is one of our top players, he's had an amazing year particular in the ODI format, he's our mainstay with the bat in the middle order. (On playing their next game in MCG) Lot of us wouldn't have played a game in a ground like that before, we're very excited playing in England, we did that and now it's exciting to play in MCG, we've got great fans there too. Kusal Mendis has been adjudged the Player of the Match for his splendid innings to steer his team through! Here's what he has to say: Bowlers set up the game for us. Wasn't a lot of runs to get, I ensured I bat through and played my natural game. The plan was to bat through the powerplay and then go after later on. The idea was to get the target by 17th over or something. Thanks to Sri Lankan fans for supporting us! Sri Lanka beat Ireland by 9 wickets
Kusal Mendis 68(43) Harry Tector 45(42)
Maheesh Theekshana 2-19(4) Gareth Delany 1-28(4)

Kusal Mendis' class coupled with Asalanka's power and timing as Sri Lanka eased past Ireland comprehensively by 9 wickets. It was evident that the mood intensity from the Ireland players were gone after they were restricted to a paltry score. They didn't show any intent with the ball as Kusal Mendis and Dhananjaya de Silva played some lovely shots inside the powerplay and helped Sri Lanka to get off to a superb start at 50-0.

Gareth Delany found a way to dismiss Dhananjaya de Silva but the partnership between Asalanka and Mendis was free-flowing and unstoppable. Mendis got off to a half-century, while Asalanka punished the Ireland bowlers after getting a lifeline from George Dockrell. In the end, it turned out to be easy-peasy for Sri Lanka as Mendis finished things off with a mighty six over deep square leg What a hit to finish things off. The roar from the crowd says it all. Ireland have been thoroughly outplayed by a dominant Sri Lankan team 15 6 1 1 2 0 6 14.6 Simi Singh to Kusal Mendis, SIX! GAME, SET AND MATCH! Just need 2 now! 14.3 Simi Singh to Charith Asalanka, drops it short on the outside off, Asalanka on the backfoot, slaps it to deep covers for one. Comes around the wicket 14.2 Simi Singh to Kusal Mendis, OH! Mendis goes for the glory shot to finish it off, he's miscued it over mid-wicket, lands safely and they settle for a single. Did you hear the sound of the bat? 14.1 Simi Singh to Kusal Mendis, SIX! BOOM! Half-tracker and it had "Hit me" written all over. Mendis pounced on it as he goes down on one knee and CLUBBED it over deep mid-wicket fence for a maximum. Two free-flowing strikes from Asalanka. He was playing some stylish cuts and flicks but is unable to find a boundary but not on that two occasions. A stand and deliver stuff before playing a lovely drive with sheer timing 14 2 1w 2 2 2 4 4 13.6 Josh Little to Charith Asalanka, FOUR MORE! Supreme timing from Asalanka this time. Length delivery on the outside off, Asalanka crouches and just creams it through cover point, there's no need to run for those. 13.5 Josh Little to Charith Asalanka, FOUR! SHOT! Length delivery on the outside off, Asalanka clears his front foot and thumped it over wide mid-off, runs away and picks out the ropes. 13.4 Josh Little to Charith Asalanka, change of pace, back of a length on the middle and leg, Asalanka clipped it to square-leg, goes wide of the fielder, they sprint back for another brace, Asalanka really need to hurry to get back in time.
