CHAMPS

PRESENTED BY No. 1 Adams State, No. 4 Colorado Mines at Metro State Invitational Metro State will host the fourth-annual Metro State Invitational on Saturday at Washington Park. IDLE THIS WEEKEND No. 5 Chico State Top-ranked Adams State will face No. 4 Colorado Mines in the meet. Adams State is coming off two strong performances; a perfect-scoring run at the Joe I. Vigil Open and a fourth-place finish, behind Division I schools, at the Griak Invitational. Colorado Mines took first among 16 non-Division I schools and runner-up out of 28 teams overall at the Stanford Invitational last Saturday. No. 6 Augustana (S.D.), No. 9 Missouri Southern at Chile Pepper Festival Head-to-head competition will take place on Saturday at the Chile Pepper Festival. The results from the competition are bound to have a lasting impression on the national polls. The race will feature four top Division II squads including No. 6 Augustana (S.D.) and No. 9 Missouri Southern. The Vikings are coming off a Division II team title on a difficult, rainy course at the Roy Griak Invitational behind second- and third-place individual finishes by senior Paul Yak and junior Adam Braun. Missouri Southern is rested following a weekend off after its home Stampede a couple weekends ago. The duo from Augustana will be tested by former national athlete of the week Eric Schott of Missouri Southern, who will also get his third race against the Arkansas men. No. 11 New Mexico Highlands will get its first test after skyrocketing from unranked to No. 11 in the national coaches' poll. West Texas A&M at No. 20 rounds out the top DII competition. No. 7 Southern Indiana, No. 8 Edinboro at Greater Louisville Classic Former national athlete of the week and Spartan Invitational individual champion Johnnie Guy and the Screaming Eagles will only have one other ranked DII squad to deal with, but it’s a top-10 match-up against No. 8 Edinboro. Southern Indiana leads by 22 votes in the National Coaches Poll against the Fighting Scots, but a close result or an upset would go a long way in tightening that race. Both No. 7 Southern Indiana and No. 8 Edinboro will settle the score in Louisville on Saturday. Saturday's meet is the second-to-last on the 2013 regular-season schedule for the Eagles. Also in the men’s field are a pair of ranked Division III squads in No. 4 Washington (Mo.) — led by former National Athlete of the Week Drew Padgett — and No. 17 Carnegie Mellon. No. 2 Western State at Mountaineer Open Second-ranked Western State will travel across the country for Appalachian State's Mountaineer Open on Friday. The Mountaineer Open will host six other teams at the Don Kennedy Trails including Virginia Tech, College of Charleston, Lenoir-Rhyne, Milligan College, King University and Montreat. At its previous meet, Western State finished as the top NCAA Division II team at the Rocky Mountain Shootout in Boulder. The Mountaineer men finished in first with 15 points. No. 3 Grand Valley State at Notre Dame Invitational Grand Valley State will run in the gold race of the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday. GVSU will have a tough test as they take on Division III powerhouse No. 1 North Central (Ill.), the defending national champions. At the Griak Invitational last weekend, the Lakers came away with a 12th-place finish in the field of 24 that included 21 Division I schools. The only DII team to do better was No. 1 Adams State. No. 10 Alaska-Anchorage at Willamette Invitational Tenth-ranked Alaska-Anchorage will compete at the 39th annual Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational at Bush Park, Salem, Ore., on Saturday. The Seawolves return to the mainland with a sweep of the BYU Hawaii Invite and Chaminade Invite on Aug. 31 and Sept. 7, respectively. The team was led in both races by junior Dylan Anthony.
