PRESENTED BY PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Rutgers head coach Fred Hill will take a leave of absence from his duties due to a medical issue, the veteran skipper announced Monday. Associate head coach Joe Litterio will take over as acting head coach. “I have complete confidence in Joe and the staff to move the program forward during my time away,” Hill said. “Having been a head coach before, Joe understands how to lead and prepare a team.” Litterio, who spent 12 seasons as the head coach at Wagner, played for Hill as an infielder from 1990 to 1993 and advanced to the NCAA Regionals three times. He returned to RU for the 2012 season as the lead assistant and recruiting coordinator. “We have had a good start to the fall season,” Litterio said. “Throughout my career as a baseball coach, I have modeled myself after much of what I learned from coach Hill. He will be missed going forward.” Hill completed his 37th season as a head coach at the collegiate level in 2013, owning a record of 1,089-749-9 (.592). In 30 years in Piscataway, he is 941-658-7 (.588) with 11 NCAA Regional appearances, 12 regular season conference championships and eight conference tournament titles. The Scarlet Knights are in the midst of their fall season that will last until the end of October.
