ULM QB Browning likely out for rest of year NCAA.com

PRESENTED BY Browning MONROE, La. -- Louisiana-Monroe head coach Todd Berry says starting senior quarterback Kolton Browning is out indefinitely with a torn quad muscle and likely will miss the rest of the season. “He’s out,” Berry said. “Right now I would say -- could he be back at some point in time? Doubtful.” Browning, the Warhawks' career passing leader, was hurt when he was sacked and fumbled in the third quarter of ULM's 31-14 loss to Tulane on Saturday night. Browning watched most of Sunday’s practice from the sidelines after receiving his MRI results but had to leave after feeling discomfort in his left leg. The quarterback already took a redshirt year in 2009 when he was a true freshman, so a medical hardship and sixth year are likely out of the question, according to Berry, “He’s been the face of the program for the last several years,” Berry said. “That’s kind of life. I hurt as much as anybody does for him because obviously our relationship in terms of me coaching him and knowing all the investment he’s put in and his willingness over the last several years to kind of put the team on his back and carry the team, you don’t want to see it go out this way. “But you know, if it doesn’t happen, he can take great pride in what he’s done from a program standpoint in relation to what he’s brought to the table and those have got to be the focal points because none of us are guaranteed that this is the way things are going to be.” Berry says sophomore Brayle Brown will make his first start Thursday night when the Warhawks play their Sun Belt Conference opener, a nationally televised game against Western Kentucky. Browning, who helped ULM earn an invitation to the Independence Bowl last season, has passed for 9,051 yards in his career, surpassing Steven Jyles' previous record of 8,987 yards from 2002-05.
