In today’s world, AARP understands how important it is that older Americans are able to access and confidently use technology to stay connected and informed, and to find the products and services they need without having to leave home.

Tech-savvy volunteers can either teach older adults the basics of using computers and the internet or use their skills to do administrative work or provide technical support.

Volunteer Roles

Class Assistant

Program

The class assistant helps Senior Planet trainers lead a formal course on technology for Senior Planet class participants. Trainers serve as primary instructors while the class assistant helps students who fall behind the pace of the class to get back on track. You may also be asked to assist with tracking attendance, reach out to students who are absent, or manage equipment distribution in the class. Classes generally meet twice a week for 10 weeks and attendance in each class is crucial. This volunteer position is ideal for someone with tutoring or teaching experience who is relatively comfortable with the most used technology products.

Data Manager

Program

(Volunteer From Home) Use your organizational and administrative skills to help AARP keep our Driver Safety records up to date. You will be responsible for inputting and maintaining the state’s electronic volunteer records within AARP’s volunteer database, and creating and exporting dashboard reports to support volunteer leaders.

Requirements

Be comfortable with technology Must complete 4 hours of provided online training Attend monthly virtual meetings with National Office staff

Time Frequency

Approximately 2 - 4 hours a week Varies according to activities and availability

Front Desk Receptionist Greeter

Program

The front desk receptionist is responsible for answering the center phone, answering emails, and keeping track of all individuals who walk through the center doors. The receptionist is also responsible for providing a warm and welcoming environment and helping new people fill out a participant form. You may also be asked to assist with filing and giving tours of the center. This volunteer position is ideal for someone who is detail oriented and who is relatively comfortable using the Internet.

Tech Talk Host

Program

The tech talk host leads a 20 to 30-minute one-on-one conversation related to technology with visiting members at the Senior Planet Center. In this role, you assist a member to accomplish a technology-related goal for the session based on their existing knowledge and our tech talk guidelines. The ability to manage expectations and redirect members to other technology-related resources is critical as tech talks are not meant to be prolonged tutoring sessions or computer repair consults. This volunteer position is ideal for someone who is relatively comfortable with the most common technology products and skilled at communicating about them in a cogent manner.

Technology Adviser

Program

(Volunteer From Home) If you’re comfortable with technology and like to share your knowledge with others, our Driver Safety Program needs you. Help fellow volunteers successfully use our online Driver Safety system, navigate the AARP Volunteer Portal, and provide troubleshooting and support to ensure the program runs smoothly for participants.
