AARP Foundation 2019 Calendar Contest Winners

Entries for the 2019 AARP Foundation Calendar poured in from across the country in record-breaking numbers. It was a difficult task to narrow down the beautiful photographs we received — but we think you’ll agree that our judges found great examples of our theme, “Treasure Every Day.” A special thank-you goes to all of those who submitted photographs, and to our judges: S. Marquette Folley, Curator and Project Director, Smithsonian Institution, Traveling Exhibition Service; Jim Schaefer, published photographer and former associate dean of the Graduate School at Georgetown; and Bronwen Latimer, Officer, Multimedia at The Pew Charitable Trusts, Former Deputy Director of Photography, Washington, D.C. Richard Gentry— Jamestown, IN

October 2018

When Richard Gentry saw two children playing at the bridge over the Eagle Creek Reservoir, he was reminded of his childhood outlook on life, when he was excited by small things and could live purely in the moment. Richard has had a camera in hand throughout his life and has a wide range of photography experience under his belt — from combat to nature.
Barbara Greenwood — Orlando, FL

November 2018

While on a trip to Florida with her grandkids, Barbara Greenwood came face to face with the Barred Owl at the Avian Reconditioning Center in Apopka. She treasured this rare opportunity to see such a beautiful animal up close and describes it as a once in a lifetime moment that she shared with loved ones and cannot wait to go back. Gerry Buckel — Fostoria, MI

December 2018

Gerry Buckel had seen others blowing frozen bubbles in years past and had almost given up after several tries. When finally succeeding, Gerry was able to snap a shot of the three Frozen Bubbles and describes the moment as one that will be treasured for life. Aside from photography, Gerry also enjoys crocheting.
Lennart Andersson — Lake Ronkonkoma, NY

January 2019

Lennart Andersson was on a trip with his wife when he came across the magical sight in Yosemite Morning Fog. Having taken photos regularly for the last five years, Lennart had to capture the moment and savor this wonderful memory. For him, being able to travel and photograph places around the country has become a treasured pastime. Curtis Antos— Summerfield, NC

February 2019

For Curtis Antos, photography is all about capturing the treasures we are lucky enough to experience each day — just like the very special and sweet scene he came across in Friends for Life. Photography has been a passion for Curtis for the last thirteen years, and it’s a hobby that allows him to remember all the special moments in time. Mary Lynn Giacomini — Sherman, IL

March 2019

Mary Lynn Giacomini loves spending time in her garden, especially during the morning hours when the sunlight is best for capturing nature’s beauties with her camera. She was very excited when she was finally able to photograph a hummingbird spending time near her flowers. The moment in Nature’s Treasures appropriately depicts her passions for nature and photography. Murry Grigsby — Olathe, KS

April 2019

While downtown with family, Murry Grigsby stumbled upon an old house with an exterior wall covered with colorful umbrellas. Since the area was going through renovation, Murry did not expect the structure to remain for much longer, so he knew that he had to capture it. For Murry, photography has been a lifetime hobby, and he is always sure to have a camera in hand. Gil Silvers — Rice, MN

May 2019

On his way to Oregon to visit family, Gil Silvers spent the night on the shore of Trillium Lake, camera in hand. He patiently waited amongst the fishermen in the early hours until he captured Morning Swim. He first thought the ducks swimming across the lake ruined his photo, but soon realized that sometimes the unexpected is what makes life beautiful. Virginia Kickle — Mt. Zion, IL

June 2019

As a nature photographer, Virginia Kickle is always on the lookout for something beautiful. The featured photograph was taken just a few miles from her home and is a sight she looks forward to all year: when spring arrives and the poppies begin to bloom. Photography has been a treasured hobby for Virginia for the last ten years. Cerrina Smith — Cheyenne, WY

July 2019

Cerrina Smith was driving around her hometown with a friend when she noticed a uniquely painted fence for the first time. When her friend exclaimed that she recently purchased a similarly patterned dress, they hurried to take advantage of the opportunity. Cerrina, who is a free spirit and nonconformist, aims to elicit emotion from her photography, and the image she captured perfectly depicts the humor and spontaneity of that moment. William Goodwin — Jensen Beach, FL

August 2019

While scuba diving with his partner, Jan, by the Mexican island of Cozumel, Bill Goodwin captured this close-up of a queen angelfish. Bill, who has been an underwater photographer for fifty years, considers this species one of the most beautiful in the Caribbean. For Bill, every moment spent in the company of reef life is a treasure. Luis Lay — Tempe, AZ

September 2019

When Luis Lay was gifted a hot air balloon ride for his birthday, he shared this first-time adventure with family and captured this scenic shot. For Luis, it’s important to enjoy new experiences and places — which he is accomplishing in his goal to visit all 50 states with his wife. Luis has been taking photos all his life but has taken it more seriously in the last five years. Donald Brown — Charlotte, NC

October 2019

Donald Brown was given his first camera when he was 17 years old and has been capturing great photographs for more than sixty years. Portland Light House was shot when Donald was traveling through the Northeast and talked a park ranger in to letting him remain in the park as the sun was setting. Sheryl Smith — Mannford, OK

November 2018

Sheryl Smith and her husband enjoy documenting their travels around the U.S., camping and exploring all the amazing views and experiences of nature that our nation provides with both still photography and video. Sheryl has enjoyed photography for the past 20 years, and she captured Sunrise Reflections in the Hayden Valley inside Yellowstone National Park. Pat Propes — Prospect, KY

December 2019

One winter morning, Pat Propes captured the scene in Showy Snow while exploring her community. She has been interested in photography since taking a class in college and has enjoyed taking pictures of her family and while on trips ever since. Pat loves sharing her photos with others and hopes that people find the same joy in them that she does. Wayne Watson — Layton, UT

Inside Front Cover

Wayne Watson has been taking photographs for more than forty years and considers himself lucky to have captured the breathtaking sight in Ray of Hope. He poignantly notes that sights like this exist all around us, and we just have to open our eyes. For Wayne, there is a story behind every photograph, and he enjoys being able to capture that moment in time. Paul Freitas — Santa Rosa, CA

Back Cover

While visiting one of his favorite birding sites, Paul Freitas captured an image of an egret carrying a twig to build its nest. To him, this photo represents the everyday opportunities we have to appreciate the wonders of this world and take advantage of what lies before us. Now that Paul is retired, he enjoys how AARP and AARP Foundation keep him informed and in touch with his peers.
