Video ADUs as a Housing Solution for Families
A multigenerational household in Minneapolis Minnesota finds a right-sized way to live together during the pandemic
Accessory dwelling units (commonly referred to ADUs) have been around for centuries as small, secondary homes that are located on the same lot as a larger, primary residence. However, the creation of new ADUs has been largely prohibited by zoning laws since the early 20th century. Yet today, due to the nationwide need for more housing options, more and more state and local governments are encouraging homeowners to create ADUs. Recognizing that ADUs benefit people of all ages, and especially older adults, has been working statewide as well as in the Twin Cities to make ADUs easier to plan, permit and build. An ADU proved to be the perfect solution for the Minneapolis family featured in this video when an older relative had to move out of a congregate living facility — and in with them — during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
