Grownups over 50 dominated five of 17 major categories in the Golden Globe nominations announced Dec. 6, which is good news for Globe nominees and Oscar hopefuls , 71, , 82, and , 60, and for movie stars who have reignited their careers in important TV shows: Julia Roberts, 51, Jim Carrey, 56, and Antonio Banderas, 58. Vexingly, the overall nominations for 50-plus actors were down — from 40 last year to 32 this time — falling from 47 percent of major nominations to 38 percent. They did best in vying for the directing and screenplay awards, taking four of the five nominations, but took only 30 percent of movie and TV acting nominations. (Male actors took 35 percent and women, 25 percent).
But all 10 nominees for best non-animated motion picture, studded with talent over age 50, are of great interest to mature audiences (and, therefore, potential candidates for ), as are the 10 nominated TV shows. Three of the five top comedies — The Good Place, Kidding and The Kominsky Method — are dominated by talent over 50, and Golden Globe nominee , 73, is a costar in the fourth, Barry. It’s especially significant that The Kominsky Method, a show about aging, earned nominations for both its stars, , 74, and Alan Arkin, 84, in the best comic roles of their careers. , 72, and Debra Messing, 50, proved that their classic shows have evergreen appeal, despite Hollywood’s notorious youth-centric views. For entertainment news, movie reviews and more, . Musically gifted grownups also cleaned up at the Golden Globes. Three of the five film composers nominated were older than 50: Dolly Parton, 72, and Linda Perry, 53, were honored for the song “Girl in the Movies” from Dumplin’, and Annie Lennox, 63, got a nomination for “Requiem For A Private War.”
