' Challenge' provides insight into caregivers' lives

Portra/Getty Images AARP and United Way Worldwide have launched an interactive online tool, "Do You Care Challenge," designed to give people a sense of , particularly millennials who fill this role. It’s also meant to encourage employers to create more caregiving-friendly workplaces. Using the tool, people walk through different scenarios representing the daily decisions and . It also provides resources and tips, including how to get additional caregiving information. “It can be difficult to understand the pressures and responsibilities that family caregivers face if you aren’t or haven’t been a caregiver yourself yet. often feel extra stress and isolation because their peers don’t relate and their employers don’t expect them to have these responsibilities,” said Nancy LeaMond, AARP's chief advocacy and engagement officer. AARP estimates there are approximately 40 million family caregivers in the U.S., with a majority employed full or part time. Of those, 25 percent are younger than 35 (the average millennial family caregiver has looked after a loved one for nearly three years). “The workplace is an area where employers can make a meaningful difference in helping the large number of their employees who are or will be family caregivers,” said Mary Sellers, U.S. president of United Way Worldwide. “One of the best ways we can support friends and family members who are caregivers is simply to ask how we can help.” The tool can be found at .
