SCSEP Participants Are Getting Great Jobs

Yolanda Wales shows how to pay it forward

Yolanda Wales of Benton Harbor, Michigan, was a former SCSEP participant, but is now an assistant property manager. Yolanda enrolled in in 2009. She was being trained to do clerical/receptionist work at the Opportunity Center in Benton Harbor, an organization that provides basic education and literacy training. After her training, Yolanda was assigned to AARP Foundation SCSEP as an employment specialist and was instrumental in helping many participants find jobs.

Looking For a Job

SCSEP provides older Americans opportunities to fill positions with employers in their local communities. One of the people she helped was placed at a local apartment complex for training as a leasing agent. As is customary, AARP Foundation SCSEP paid the participant’s salary while she was in training. After a short while, the participant and the agency decided the job was not a good fit. The participant talked with Yolanda about all the things she was trying to learn, and Yolanda realized it was something that she might like to do herself. So Yolanda took the required leasing agent training, passed the test, and got her license, which SCSEP paid for. She was then hired by the leasing agency. The agency manages two large properties in Benton Harbor, and Yolanda is vital to its success. Yolanda truly believes in the and has hired three SCSEP participants since she began her career with the leasing agency. And she’s eager to hire more. Yolanda is grateful for the training she received and the opportunities she had with AARP Foundation SCSEP, which she says made all the difference in her getting ahead. Her gratitude is perhaps most clearly expressed by her hiring other SCSEP participants. It’s her way of “paying it forward.”
