Disrupt Aging Goes Global

AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins recently attended the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development’s global forum to share AARP's work and discuss the Disrupt Aging movement. The overwhelmingly positive response to her message reinforced that individuals, organizations and governments across the globe recognize the new realities of aging and are ready to take a stand against outdated, ageist beliefs and develop cross-sector solutions that give people more choices for how they live and age. During two days at the OECD Forum in Paris, Jo Ann presented AARP and Disrupt Aging to 500 thought leaders from more than 60 countries. Ultimately, her message reached an audience of nearly 5.3 million people through a mix of interviews and op-ed pieces in various global media, as well as 2 million Twitter users. She also met with dynamic leaders including, OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría, who cited the need to address aging societies in the OECD's reform agenda as far back as 2014; and with Pascale Boistard, France’s secretary of state for seniors and autonomy. The consistent message: we must acknowledge the implications presented by new realities of aging on our families, communities and economies and explore how this growing population can contribute to the world’s economic strength. There has never been a better time to spread this message. By the year 2050, there will be 2 billion people 60 and older.
