84-Year-Old Amateur Photographer Beats the Odds

Daniel Afzal John Funderburk showcases his stamp in New York City.
John Funderburk’s photo becomes the ninth of 16 stamps to celebrate the National Park Service’s 100th anniversary. And that is quite a coup! The Postal Service receives about 40,000 suggestions for stamp ideas each year, and only about 25 topics make the cut. Funderburk, who lives in Hernando, Fla., took the photo of a heron in 2009, when he was merely 77. Now it will be immortalized on a National Park Services' forever stamp. All of the stamps show views of national parks or plants, animals, artwork, objects and structures found in or associated with a National Park. They are being revealed over a three-week period this month. Here’s Funderburk at the ceremony for the stamps at the Javits Center in New York. Go, John!
