“They don’t make ’em like the used to” is a popular phrase that often applies to consumer products we use every day. Thankfully, it does not apply to cars. Cars are also a lot more complicated. Vehicle technologies have advanced a tremendous amount in the past 10 to 15 years, making us safer, but also making us learn new features and change habits.

Building on more than a decade of research on safe driving for a lifetime, The Hartford Center for Mature Market ExcellenceSM and the MIT AgeLab’s research on Top Technologies for Mature Drivers identified which technologies are beneficial for mature drivers and explored drivers’ comfort and confidence in using these technologies. That research involved an extensive review of new technologies by leading experts in driving, aging and technology and a survey of drivers over age 50 about new vehicle technology. The leading experts are practitioners and researchers with expertise in geriatric medicine, kinesiology, human factors and occupational therapy.

The expert panel identified 10 top technologies that are beneficial for promoting capacity, confidence and convenience for drivers as they age. AARP Driver Safety collaborated with The Hartford Center for Mature Market ExcellenceSM and the MIT AgeLab to build the Top Technologies for Mature Drivers Interactive Tool that shows how these features work on a “virtual car.”
