NorthCenter Senior Campus Set on an 8-acre lot that once housed a hospital, this campus is home to 282 residential units. Three buildings surround a central commons area and corner park. Two buildings offer affordable units for rent—including federally subsidized apartments—while the third is made up of condominiums starting from $189,000. Each building offers various amenities, including community rooms, libraries, fitness centers, and salons. A centrally located senior satellite center gives community and city residents access to art and computer classes, a personal trainer, and a massage therapist, and the center’s outdoor patio serves as a social spot for residents and neighbors. Individual units and sidewalks are wide and accessible, and buildings are within walking distance of local shops and restaurants. Residents can easily avoid car traffic since pedestrian safety is integrated into the design of the campus. Walkers can gain direct access to the grounds from eight different entry points and can stroll on a half mile of paths. The Lakota Group, whose Native American name means "allies," collaborated with local and federal agencies to create the community. Now the finished area includes two bus stops—helping connect residents to shopping and to an elevated train station, a landscaped public park, easy-to-access benches, and a welcoming fountain.
