Each community will focus on cultivating more affordable housingoptions, accessible transportation and other mobility options, andwell-run community centers with desirable programs and socializingevents. The Livable Community Connection is addressing problems thatWestchester County residents age 50 and older identified in an AARPsurvey.
Among the survey findings: • 90% of Westchester county residents age 50+ get around theirneighborhood by car which makes improved traffic conditions and streetrepair an important modification.
• Affordable housing factors heavily into older adults’ being able to age with dignity and grace in their own homes.
• Although most residents drive, those who do not see the importance ofimproving the proximity and limitations of public transportation.

Westchester County wants to be a model nationwide for aging babyboomers. One in every five county residents is age 60 or older. WithAARP and the Westchester Public/Private Partnership for Aging Services,the county recently launched the Livable Community Connection, anetwork of nine sites around the county, to develop neighborhoods thatenable older residents to age in place and live independently.Each community will focus on cultivating more affordable housingoptions, accessible transportation and other mobility options, andwell-run community centers with desirable programs and socializingevents.
