Assisted living is the fastest growing type of senior housing in the United States, with an estimated 600,000 residents living in between 25,000 and 30,000 facilities nationwide. States are responsible for oversight, but their regulations vary greatly. There are no uniform federal assisted living standards. In this AARP Public Policy Institute overview of state statutes and regulations regarding assisted living, Stephanie Edelstein and Karen Gaddy of the American Bar Association identify key consumer protection provisions, such as admission, transfer and discharge criteria; resident rights, and grievance procedures. This first of three volumes contains a guide to - and table of - state statutes while the second and third volumes provide summaries of specific state statutes.
