Make Your Steps and Stairways Safe

Look around your home and answer these questions

Answer the following questions about your home. If you find problems, these solutions can help. 1) Are the steps in good repair? If the answer is no: Replace or remove any worn or torn carpeting. Make sure no nail heads are sticking out. Refinish or replace worn treads. Choose a carpet pattern that doesn't hide step edges, making it look as if the steps have ended when they haven't.
2) Are there handrails on both sides of stairway?
If the answer is no: Install handrails on both sides of the steps, and do so at a height that provides you with better balance. 3) Are there any objects on the stairs?
If the answer is yes: Remove all clutter from steps to avoid tripping and falling. 4) Are there light switches at both the top and bottom of the stairs?
If the answer is no: Install light switches at the top and bottom of the stairs.
5) Are the stairs well lit?
If the answer is no: Install the highest wattage light bulb allowed for overhead or nearby light fixtures. Install night-lights in nearby outlets. 6) Can you clearly see the edges of the steps?
If the answer is no: Paint or put tape with contrasting color at the edge of the step. Replace or add non-slip adhesive strips.
