Addressing North Dakota s Housing Crisis

North Dakota’s housing crisis is unique. There is insufficient housing in parts of the state for working people to rent or buy. With housing at such a premium, long-time residents who are on a fixed income are being priced out of the market. The issue is twofold. We need housing for workforce, but we also need to maintain decent, affordable, accessible housing for retired people and people with disabilities.

The Housing Alliance for North Dakota (HAND) is a coalition of advocates and individuals who have an interest in housing issues. AARP North Dakota is a member of the coalition, which is working together under the principle that housing is a basic human need. The objective is to address unmet housing needs for all populations, in all areas of the state.

When the 2011 North Dakota Legislature convenes in January, HAND will work with lawmakers to establish a North Dakota Housing Trust Fund. At this time, 43 states have some kind of city, county, or state housing trust fund. Housing trust funds are used to provide low and no-interest loans or match federal block grants to build or refurbish housing, allowing contractors to keep the costs down. With this resource, North Dakota could enhance affordable housing options and address critical housing needs for low-income people.
