There is something profoundly disturbing, almost schizophrenic, about our approach to human rights. We have fought wars, protecting our freedom of speech and other rights. Yet we have created a legal system that leaves those rights in the wastebasket when we go to work. We could have outlawed these abuses, but we haven’t. A handful of states have enacted laws that prohibit employers from firing people because of their politics or from putting video cameras in bathrooms. But in most states, the abuses are completely legal. As of now, there isn’t much you can do to protect yourself, but there are actions you can take, starting with learning more about the company before you accept a job. In the long run, the only answer is to change the law. From Can They Do That?
