Peggy Post' s Guide to Modern Manners Wedding Invitation Wording

Your trickiest etiquette questions answered

Question: A bride wants to honor her late father by having his name appear on the wedding invitation. The mother of the bride has remarried, and the mother and stepfather are hosting the wedding. What should the invitation say? Answer: She is not the first bride who wants to include a deceased parent's name on her wedding invitation. This is understandable, as long as the invitation doesn't appear to be issued by the deceased (as in "…the late William Buckley requests the honor of your presence …"). Since the bride's mother has remarried and she and her husband are hosting the wedding, the invitation reads: Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Deyoner
request the honor of your presence
at the marriage of their daughter
Diane Marie Buckley,
daughter of the late Mr. William Buckley,
to
Daniel Delapaz Diaz
Saturday, the twenty-third of October
two thousand ten
at half after four o'clock

daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Deyoner and the late Mr. William Buckley
and
Daniel Delapaz Diaz
request the honor of your presence
