As parents and loved ones grow older, many employees find themselves in the role of caregiver to their aging family members which may necessitate occasional absenteeism, early departures from work, late arrival to work, personal phone calls, and emotional distraction. In 2004, there were an estimated 416,214 caregivers in South Carolina who devoted 446 million hours to caregiving. The annual market value of this informal, unpaid caregiving is $4.4 million. This AARP survey of companies in South Carolina with at least one employee assesses what resources are available to employees caring for older relatives.
