This and Related Reports
All residents of Florida deserve to have access to a range of affordable, reliable, and quality long-term care (LTC) services. This survey was commissioned by AARP Florida and the Lee County Coalition for the Enrichment and Independence of Seniors to explore how residents of Southwest Florida access needed health care services in their communities. The report is based on a late-2006 telephone survey of 1,004 residents age 50 and older of Southwest Florida. Key findings include: One in six respondents has tried to get information about senior services in Southwest Florida, and 51% of these respondents say such information was difficult to find. Over four in ten (43%) way finding information about services that help pay for LTC is difficult, and 58% say finding affordable LTC in their community would be difficult. A quarter (24%) say they will need to make modifications to their current residences in order to live there as long as they want. Two in ten (22%) say they would use public transportation more often if it were affordable and convenient. Most respondents (91%) have some form of health care coverage; 48% have coverage through Medicare. The sample of 1,004 respondents was structured so that 800 interviews were collected at random; Hispanics were over-sampled until 204 interviews were completed with respondents who identified themselves as Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish. The survey was conducted from November 20 to December 22, 2006. For more information, contact Erica Dinger at 202-434-6176.
