Courtesy ABC Kitchen Mark your calendar for restaurant week in these major cities. as much as I am, you'll find no better time to explore a city's best cuisine on a budget than during its restaurant week — when the top eateries offer great deals on three-course prix fixe lunches and dinners.

More and more destinations around the country are launching these irresistible promotions, some twice a year, some even for a whole month. They tend to fall during a location's low or shoulder season — Miami's restaurant month is in August, for example — so not only can you enjoy top-notch dining, but hotels are likely to be less expensive, too. Just be sure to make reservations well before your trip. A few restaurant promotions worth tasting: NYC RESTAURANT WEEK (Two three-week stints, in January-February and July-August) $25 lunches and $38 dinners at more than 300 venues — a chance to try Asia de Cuba, ABC Kitchen and other top spots. COOLinary New Orleans Restaurant Month (August) $20-or-less lunches and $39-or-less dinners at more than 80 locations; Commander's Palace and Brigtsen's are local faves. Portland Dining Month, Oregon (March) $29 dinners at more than 120 restaurants, including red-hot eateries such as Kachka, for Russian cuisine, the French bistro Little Bird and Spanish-focused Ataula
