10 of the Most Colorful Places in the World
Vibrant Vistas
Like to travel in Technicolor? From iridescent lakes to flower fields aflame, from stone arches glowing gold in the desert to curtains of light shimmering in the night sky, these color-soaked landscapes are banquets for the eye. Also of InterestHolland s Tulip Fields
What more authentic place to tiptoe through the tulips than Holland in mid-April? The growing season for the Netherlands’ iconic bulb runs from late March to mid-May, but in April you can count on seeing the flowers in their true rainbow glory. Head for Keukenhof — a sprawling 80-acre park in the town of Lisse, about 30 minutes outside Amsterdam — where you’ll find 800 varieties and 7 million individual tulips. To make the experience even more quintessentially Dutch, pedal past the fields on a bicycle; you can rent one just outside the park entrance. u remeber once i asked her as this pant has become loose antaCranberry Bogs in Massachusetts
Imagine sitting down to a pond-size serving of cranberry sauce, and you’ll begin to get an idea of the color riot that is a cranberry bog in Massachusetts. Home to more than 14,000 acres of bogs, the Bay State is the place to sate your cranberry-red cravings throughout the fall — just in time for you-know-what in November. Local farms offer tours that teach casual visitors all about the state’s No. 1 cash crop. If you’re lucky, you may get to pull on waders and have your photo taken knee-deep in floating berries. Leave the camera filters in the car when you visit Grand Prismatic, the largest hot spring in Yellowstone National Park. From orange and yellow to green and blue, its naturally radiant palette continues to bedazzle visitors in the park’s Midway Geyser Basin. The tints are actually a sign of the spring’s year-round residents: microbacteria that thrive in this intense geothermal environment. (Different types live in each successive ring, thus the rainbow of colors.) Walk along the boardwalk to take in both the Grand Prismatic and nearby Excelsior Geyser.Iceland s Northern Lights
The grandest light show on Earth is actually the handiwork of the sun, which ejects charged particles that glow when they hit our atmosphere. And Iceland — just a six-hour flight from the East Coast of the U.S. — makes a fine place for viewing the aurora borealis, especially from September through mid-April. Not only does the country’s latitude (65 degrees) put it just below the Arctic Circle, but if you head for Landmannalaugar, you can soak in a geothermal pool with a light show overhead.Lake Hillier Australia
Salt-loving microbes give this small body of water on Middle Island (off western Australia) its bubblegum hue. But the Sunburnt Country has even more in store: Lake Hillier is surrounded by a narrow white-sand beach — itself encircled by a forest of deep-greeneucalyptus and paperbark trees — that extends to the cerulean waters of the Southern Ocean. Middle Island is so remote that it can be reached only by chartered plane or boat. Once there, however, your only neighbors may be the lake’s native and migratory birds.Canyonlands National Park
Canyonlands, secreted away in southeast Utah’s high desert, can easily overwhelm even a professional photographer. This little-known, lightly trafficked national park is home to plunging chasms and soaring pillars of stone, all glowing a buttery orange at the “golden hour” — for that perfect light chased by photographers just after sunup and just before sundown. The shades change like a slowly turning kaleidoscope as the day wears on, the bright blue skies darkening dramatically with the rare passing storm cloud. And when the aspen and tamarisk trees change color in the fall, Canyonlands Park becomes an unexpected leaf-peeping destination.AARP Offer Explore Your World

St Basil s Cathedral Moscow
In Moscow’s Red Square stands a swirl of colors and shapes seemingly plucked from a Candy Land board game. Completed in 1560, St. Basil’s Cathedral was still blowing tourists away 300 years later, when a French diplomat described the multicolored mass as bearing “the scales of a golden fish, the enameled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon’s neck.” See it for yourself, and a few more animals may pop to mind!Texas Bluebonnet Trail
Traveling to Dallas this spring? Hit the bluebonnet trail in late March or early April if you want to see the hills of central and southeastern Texas carpeted with the vivid blue wildflowers. The garden club of Ennis — a Dallas neighbor and the self-styled Official Bluebonnet City of Texas — has mapped out a 40-mile driving trail ideal for viewing the roadside lupines (named the Texas state flower in 1971). If you time your drive right, you’ll finish at sunset, when the sky paints a perfect pink-orange backdrop.Lavender Fields of Japan
The Crayola box of a giant? No, it’s the flower farms of Furano, Japan, which blanket the rolling hills surrounding this cozy city on the country’s northernmost island. Giving the south of France a run for its money, the Hokkaido prefecture is renowned for its seemingly endless meadows of lavender that reach peak bloom in summer. Other enterprises nearby — Farm Tomita is one — grow varieties of poppy, baby’s breath and catchfly. Collectively, they form a polychromatic paradise. The Canal in Nyhavn Copenhagen
Nyhavn — the historic waterfront district of Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital — boasts a stretch of colorful buildings that rival the city’s colorful nightlife. Most of the row houses have been renovated, including one dating to 1681, and some once belonged to prominent artists and writers. Hans Christian Andersen, for example, wrote several early fairytales here. From rust to ocher to tangerine, the canalfront structures seem intent on spanningthe color wheel. Also of Interest
