Best Places for a Second Honeymoon

Cumberland Island Georgia

You’ll feel among the privileged on this barrier island just off the coast. Access is by boat only, with limited visitation, so you’ll likely have a gorgeous beach to yourself. For true luxury, stay at the Greyfield Inn, built by the Carnegie family on 200 private acres.

Quebec City Canada

How do you visit Europe on this side of the Atlantic? Explore the Old World milieu of this highly walkable city, where French is the official language and sidewalk cafés line cobblestone lanes. Vieux-Québec, the old town, sits atop a hill overlooking the St. Lawrence River. Stroll Dufferin Terrace boardwalk for splendid views, then take the funicular down to Basse-Ville for great shops and restaurants.

Palm Springs California

This desert resort less than a two-hour drive east of Los Angeles is famed for the glamorous era when Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Bob Hope and countless others made it their favored escape from Hollywood. Elvis honeymooned here! The city got seedy for a while, but guess what? It’s hip again. Stay in one of the gloriously refurbished retro hotels and tour historic architecture and the homes of the stars. Pretend you’re Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, slipping away for a secret rendezvous to sip cool drinks by the pool. For something truly “wild,” visit Joshua Tree National Park, less than an hour away.

Curacao

This out-of-the-way Caribbean island is now accessible on JetBlue'sdirect flights from New York’s JFK Airport. Skip the resort and hide in a B&B. Lounge on the beach to your heart’s content, then shop and sightsee in Willemstad or hike, bike and try some snorkeling.

Estes Park Colorado

This compact town sits on the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park, within sight of the peaks of the Continental Divide. Choose from an array of romantic accommodations — from creekside cabins with outdoor hot tubs to the grand 1909 Stanley Hotel, which inspired Stephen King’s novel The Shining. Panoramas along Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in America, are awe-inspiring, and the park encompasses dozens of beautiful alpine lakes that make great destinations for easy day hikes.

Barcelona Spain

History, beaches, urban glitz: Barcelona has it all. The city’s delights range from evening strolls along the narrow streets of the ancient Gothic Quarter to sun-drenched days on one of the many lively Mediterranean beaches. Sip cava (Spain’s Champagne) at a café on the upscale boulevard called La Rambla or take the funicular up Montjuic to take in the view of the harbor and surrounding hills. Everyone wants to see Antoni Gaudí’s weirdly wonderful Sagrada Familia church, but don’t miss the celebrated architect’s designs at Parc Güell.

Ozark Mountains Arkansas

Considering a fall-foliage trip but worried about the leaf-peeping crowds in Vermont? Head for northwestern Arkansas’s Ozark Mountains for your second honeymoon, where oaks, hickories and maples provide a glorious autumn show along meandering byways. The new Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, funded by an heir to Wal-Mart billions, gets rave reviews for both its collection and its design by architect Moshe Safdie. Stop at Eureka Springs, “the place where misfits fit,” a community of artists, musicians and assorted counterculture types. Preserved Victorian buildings have put the entire town on the National Register of Historic Places, and romance-themed B&Bs abound.

Las Vegas Nevada

The days of near-giveaway hotel rooms may be gone, but that’s a good thing. Today’s Vegas is more upscale (read: less tacky) than ever, and endless choices for entertainment have transformed the venerable Strip. Art by Henry Moore, Maya Lin, Frank Stella and Claes Oldenburg decorates the 67 acres of the CityCenter lodging and entertainment venue; Cirque du Soleil’s “Zarkana” show plays in the eye-popping Aria Hotel. C’mon! Las Vegas is an American icon, and everybody’s gotta see it at least once. Take the plunge and revel in the neon glitz.

Santa Fe New Mexico

Historic, scenic, artistic — this capital city is all this and more. It’s aromatic, too: The smell of pinyon pine in kiva fireplaces in fall and winter is, for many visitors, their most enduring memory of the city. Downtown and on Canyon Road, dozens of restaurants, art galleries and museums (including one dedicated to painter Georgia O’Keeffe) invite strolling. The daily market on the central Plaza offers authentic Native American jewelry and pottery. Feeling romantic? Book a private suite or couples’ massage at Ten Thousand Waves, a Japanese-style spa 10 minutes from downtown.

New York New York

Romance in the Big Apple? Yes, even this fast-paced metropolis has its soft side. You may have to wait in a long line for the nighttime panorama atop the Empire State Building, but the unforgettable urban constellation is worth the effort. Locals enjoy the stunning views of Manhattan from the Brooklyn Heights Promenade or a night ride on the Staten Island Ferry. Central Park is great for a stroll — or, of course, a carriage ride. Love movies? Visit tiny Sutton Place Park at the east end of 58th Street, where Woody Allen and Diane Keaton watched the sunrise in Manhattan, or take a You’ve Got Mail tour of the Upper West Side.

Seattle Washington

Not too big, not too small — the Northwest’s premier city is just right for a laid-back second honeymoon. With the Cascade Mountains on the horizon and lots of water and green space, it’s one of America’s prettiest cities, too. Go see the fabulously futuristic Central Library, explore the maze of shops and eateries at the Pike Place Market and the nearby Aquarium. Then ride the Monorail to the iconic Space Needle (at sunset in good weather the view is worth the price). Check out the adjacent rock ’n’ roll museum called the Experience Music Project. Enjoy the view from Puget Sound by riding a state ferry to Bainbridge Island and back.

California s Other Wine Country

When it comes to wine-country fame, Napa Valley wins hands-down. But many travelers prefer the less-trafficked Sonoma County for a second honeymoon escape. Great restaurants, limousine wine-tasting tours (Sonoma boasts close to 400 wineries), quaint towns, pampering spas — the county has all that, plus the Pacific. Follow the Russian River from Guerneville through the coast redwoods to the Pacific and scenic Highway 1. Head south to Bodega Bay and return inland, stopping for a meal in Occidental or the town of Sonoma. Better yet, pack your own meal and visit one of the wineries that encourage picnicking.
