10 Cheap International Destinations You Must Visit International
Budget-Friendly International Destinations
MARTIN DIMITROV/GETTY IMAGES Wawel Castle is one of Krakow, Poland's many cultural highlights. With most of us doing some recession-driven belt-tightening and with airfares rising, who can even think about taking a big ? The answer is: You. There are plenty of stunning, great-value overseas destinations that allow you to stretch your hard-earned dollars. Try one of these: 1 India
Outside of the hotels in Mumbai and Delhi, India's offerings are reasonably priced, if not downright cheap. And the country has lots of landscape and culture for the buck. Lounge on tucked-away beaches in Goa or Kerala, or head for the snow-topped Himachal Pradesh for low-cost skiing. Stay in Rajasthan's former palaces and live like a maharaja for less. Traveling by train while dining at low-key local places both saves money and makes your trip more authentic. 2 Turkey
The sightseeing is varied, from Istanbul's opulent Ottoman palaces to Cappadocia's moonscape rock formations; the locals are friendly and good deals abound. Although resort nightclubs can be expensive, you can have just as good a time drinking a cool Efes beer with locals at a streetside cafe. From Antalya, take a Mediterranean cruise on a peaceful gulet (two-masted sailing ship) to spot Roman ruins along the Turkish Riviera, or find good deals at golf courses in nearby Belek. 3 Poland
This culture-rich corner of Eastern Europe knows how to offer value for money. Krakow is a cultural highlight, thanks to its historical Kazimierz Jewish quarter and cobbled medieval center with affordable apartments to rent. At the foot of the High Tatras Mountains, get your camera ready for the Alpine-like town of Zakopane and its unique 19th-century wooden structures. Or explore the restored Royal Castle, the centerpiece of the now-gleaming capital, Warsaw. 4 Laos br
It's easy to find natural beauty and friendly locals in Laos, which has even better deals than Thailand. Enjoy exploring the capital, Vientiane, with its sleepy riverfront and statue-studded Buddha Park. Watch saffron-robed monks at dawn moving gracefully around the temple-filled holy town of Luang Prabang, or discover dramatic megalithic stone vessels, believed to be funerary urns, in the Plain of Jars. 5 Morocco br
Mountains, deserts and coastline provide plenty of scenic variety in this North African jewel, and so do its cities. Get lost in Fez's warren-like medieval medina or practice your haggling skills in Marrakech's exoticsouks (marketplaces). Feeling adventurous? Enjoy local hospitality in the Berber villages of the High Atlas Mountains, where a stay in a riad (traditional house with an interior courtyard) can be comparable in price to a stay in a U.S. budget chain hotel. 6 Nicaragua br
Intrepid travelers will love safe, peaceful Nicaragua, from its Caribbean shores to its rustic farms in the northern highlands. And you'll find inexpensive rooms everywhere — in intimate coastal resorts or mountain retreats. Birdwatchers should head to Rio San Juan to spot Tennessee warblers and red macaw, or float down the jungle river to view the tropical birdlife undisturbed. Enjoy the turquoise waters of unspoiled Picnic Beach on the Caribbean Corn Islands. 7 Egypt br
It pays to keep up with the latest political developments, as pockets of this treasure-laden country might be safe enough for savvy travelers — and have bargains galore. You might avoid Cairo's pyramids and Tutankhamen's treasures, but find space on the beaches of Sharm el Sheikh for a budget winter break. Or sit back on a felucca (small wooden sailboat) cruise down the Nile to the dramatic Karnak Temple.
8 Slovakia br
In no time at all, you'll be shouting "Na zdravie!" ("To your health!"), drink in hand, to toast this friendly, compact and relatively young country (independent for just 20 years). Hop from cafe to cafe in the Old Town of the capital, Bratislava; explore the medieval Spis Castle; and enjoy ancient folk culture in traditional villages for a song.
9 Northern Ireland br
You can get great deals in Northern Ireland this year, when Derry reigns as the United Kingdom's City of Culture. Pritzker-winning architect Zaha Hadid's cutting-edge Titanic Belfast museum brings fresh life to the dockyard where the doomed cruise liner was built. Stay in an inexpensive guesthouse near Antrim's seaside Giant's Causeway, where you can scramble around the astounding interlocking rock columns. 10 Peru br
There's plenty to offer in this South American gem — and that's even avoiding busy Machu Picchu. If you like dramatic scenery and natural beauty, explore the Amazon rainforest or visit the Colca Canyon, which is twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. Lima's locals love their food, and you can sample Peru's world-renowned cuisine at restaurants in the city's Miraflores district. At Pasquale Hermanos — one of several restaurants operated by acclaimed Peruvian chef Gaston Acurio — traditional sanguches (sandwiches) make for an affordable, authentic meal. Also of Interest
