Eight Fun Ferry Rides

Enjoy the waterfronts of several of the nation’s waterways on fun little ferry rides. Ferry rides give you the opportunity to take in sweeping panoramic views, enjoy a misty breeze, or just experience a great sunset. Here are eight fun ferry rides that may not be far from you.

Angel Island Tiburon Ferry California

Capt. Maggie McDonogh's family has owned the Angel Island Tiburon ferry for four generations. On sunset cruises and crossings to beautiful Angel Island, Capt. Maggie narrates the history of the area. A second-level deck makes for great views.

Bald Head Island Ferry North Carolina

This luxurious, remote island off the coast of southeastern North Carolina is a popular vacation spot for Southerners, many of whom say their vacation starts the moment they board the catamaran passenger ferry. On the 20-minute ride, pods of dolphins — unofficial welcoming committees — often swim alongside.

Watch the fireworks from the free — you read that right — ferries at Walt Disney World. No, you don't need park tickets to ride them (again, and again, and again), and the grandchildren will clap three times because they believe in fairies — Tinkerbell and water rides alike.

The Hatton Ferry Virginia

The Hatton Ferry has been crossing the James River for more than 140 years, powered only by the people who use poles to push it across. The last poled ferry in America, it has carried passengers, the mail, farm products and horse-drawn carriages through the years.

Chappaquiddick Ferry Massachusetts

Perhaps the shortest ferry ride in America, the flatbed Chappaquiddick ferry — or the "Chappy" ferry, as locals put it —carries passengers and cars 527 feet from Martha's Vineyard's Edgartown to Chappaquiddick in three minutes. People often bike and picnic on the tiny island (infamous for an accident involving the late Sen. Ted Kennedy).

Put-in-Bay Ferry Ohio

In the Lake Erie Islands, the 1938 tugboat 'Restless' putts along as a ferryboat from South Bass Island to Catawba Island. Although it's tiny, holding only six passengers, it's known for its leisurely historical narrative tours and lovely weddings.

Staten Island Ferry New York

Climb aboard the Staten Island Ferry for a free 25-minute ride from Manhattan to Staten Island (about five miles), and another 25 minutes back. On the way, snuggle up to your honey as you catch a romantic view of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline.

Lake Champlain Ferry New York

The Lake Champlain ferries carry passengers from Port Kent, New York, to beautiful Burlington, Vermont in summertime. Bring your own picnic for the scenic 70-minute cruise, and watch for a glimpse of Champie, the lake monster said to dwell in Champlain's frigid depths.
