Newport, Vermont, joined the in 2013. The report explores the opinions of Newport residents age 45 and older about both aging in place and how engaged they feel in their community's civic, economic and social life.

KEY FINDINGS

Newport residents age 45-plus have lived in Orleans County and their town for a long time and are likely to remain there as they get older.
59% have lived in Orleans County for at least 45 years and 51% have lived in their current town for at least 25 years

37% say it is extremely or very important to stay in their town as they age

69% say they are not very or not at all likely to move outside of Orleans County when they retire and stop working completely In addition, the majority of Newport residents age 45-plus: own their homes and say having home repair contractors who are trustworthy, affordable, and do quality work is the most important housing feature in their town

say it is important to have outdoor spaces and buildings in their neighborhood that allow access for people of different physical abilities

mostly drive themselves to get around their town, and many believe it is important to have well-maintained, safe streets that support all users

want to stay healthy and therefore believe having good health care facilities, services, and providers is important

want to have social and volunteer activities in their town

will work for as long as possible and believe it is important to have community supports that will enable them to do so

The survey was fielded from October 31 through November 24, 2014, and exactly 328 usable surveys from Newport were returned by the cut-off date. The sample was weighted by age and gender to reflect the actual distribution of Orleans County residents age 45-plus and the weighted number of responses is also 696.
