Full Report

Overview

According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, the Great Recession began in December 2007 and ended in June 2009. The Urban Institute Program on Retirement Policy published this report on statistics to identify trends in the unemployment rate during and after the recession. The information is sorted by age, race, sex, and education level of people in the labor force. These are simply the statistics, conveniently organized. However, no analysis is provided.

Key Points

The information used in this document comes from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as well as the Urban Institute’s estimates from the Current Population Survey. The first six items are charts that show the national unemployment rate from November 2007 to July 2012, broken down by age, race, sex, and education level. The other half of the document is a series of tables with the same information, but broken down numerically by month.

How to Use

This document consists of only the visual representations of data; there are no conclusions, analysis, or summaries. In that sense, the interpretation of this information is very much up to each user, as it isn’t framed around one particular topic. Local officials and policymakers can use this document to find well-organized information on older adults and unemployment trends. View full report:
