Oregon Congregate and Home-Delivered Nutrition Program Standards
Full Report
Overview
Adequate nutrition is key for older adults who wish to remain independent and age in place in their homes. The Oregon Senior Nutrition Program is part of a larger Older Americans Act (OAA) nutrition program intended to support independent living for older Oregonians by providing healthy meals, promoting health and disease prevention, reducing malnutrition risk, and increasing social interaction and engagement, among other things. This report examines the progress the Oregon Senior Nutrition Program has made in improving the overall health and well-being of older OregoniansKey Points
The program aims to provide congregate nutrition services and home-delivered meals to older adults who need these supportive services in order to age in place. The report provides information about program criteria and who qualifies for such nutrition services. In order to qualify for home-delivered meals, for example, a person must be 60 years or older and homebound by injury or illness, mentally or physically unable to shop for groceries, or unable to safely prepare meals (page 3). Congregate nutrition services are intended to provide nutritious meals for adults 60 and older while creating an environment where these seniors can gather for a meal, thus promoting social interaction and decreasing the risk of social isolation. The report provides an outline of congregate nutrition service standards, as well as home-delivered meal standards to guide communities looking to implement similar programs. How to Use
The report provides a high-level of information regarding the Oregon Senior Nutrition Program and the steps this initiative has taken to improve the well-being of older Oregonians. Community leaders and local officials can use this report to gain an understanding of the important role nutrition plays in allowing for healthy aging in place. Nutrition education resources and materials are also provided at the end of the report to assist communities with implementing nutrition programs for older adults.
