Overview

The American Society on Aging (ASA) has 5,000 members across the spectrum of those interested in providing services for older adults, including businesses, non-profits and universities. The Society’s goal is to educate and train organizations on ways to “improve the quality of life of older adults and their families.” The ASA website stays true to this goal by providing webinars, articles and links on a variety of age-related topics.

Key Points br

The website has three main sections: Education, Business and Diversity.

Listen

Alyne Ellis talks with Gary Kaye, who blogs about technology on AARP.org, about several new apps that may help caregivers. He also describes one for first responders. Highlights include: The Education section offers training options, resources and links on the following topics: business, caregiving, community-based programs, creativity and lifelong learning, housing, accessibility and technology, LGBT aging, mental health, multicultural aging, physical health, policy and advocacy, religion and spirituality. One should note that LGBT and multicultural aging resources are also featured in the “Diversity” section. The “business” section under provides options and articles on issues concerning businesses and aging.
The Business section serves 1) as incentive to become an ASA member, 2) as a portal for information regarding the ASA business forum (conference), 3) as a job matching resources in aging services. For more information on what membership might offer, there are four “success stories” including the MetLife Foundation, Archstone Foundation, Home Instead Senior Care and Walmart. One training incentive is the page, which outlines a program training tomorrow’s age-friendly leaders.
The Diversity section has links to various networks. One other aspect in the diversity feature is the LGBT Aging Resources Clearinghouse, which links to a searchable database of LGBT resources (to go there directly: ). These resources are helpful for local planners who wish to learn more about the special needs of this aging demographic.

How to Use br

The ASA website is a helpful resource for planners, local governments and business leaders interested in learning more about training opportunities, ways to connect with other businesses, or ideas for new programs within their own organizations. In addition, those searching for age-related conferences and/or forums will find a significant resource in the ASA. Web Resource:
