Overview

The number of older adults age 60+ in San Antonio, Texas is expected to increase by 55 percent between 2010 and 2020. Partners for Livable Communities and the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging conducted a workshop in San Antonio that focused on four main areas for improvement in redesigning communities to better meet the needs of all residents: Planning, Mobility, Health and Wellness, and Social Integration.

Key Points br

The report analyzes the topics discussed during the workshop, outlines the unique challenges and opportunities San Antonio will face as its older adult population continues to grow, and addresses existing programs and organizations in the area that aim to redesign communities and make them more livable for all residents. The report emphasizes how livability resources in a community, ranging from museums and parks to sidewalks and road design, can be redesigned to better serve the older adult population and the community as a whole.

Other report highlights include:
Walkability is one of the most critical components of a livable neighborhood. Providing adequate sidewalks and walking/biking trails not only makes neighborhoods more livable but improves the overall health of communities as well.
Social involvement and community engagement are critical to healthy aging. However, older adults consistently say that one of the most difficult aspects of aging is maintaining connections and relationships with friends and family. The Neighbor Helping Neighbor program has been implemented to provide complementary services to older adults while decreasing their risk of isolation through social interaction.
The Bicycle Master Plan was created by the City of San Antonio and Bexar County to make biking a viable mode of transportation throughout the city for residents of all ages. Find regarding this initiative.
