Overview

By 2020, one in four Florida residents will be over age 65 and half will be 75 or older. Nearly 42 percent of the 60+ population in Florida’s Miami-Dade and Monroe counties is living at or near the poverty level. Partners for Livable Communities, the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging, and MetLife Foundation conducted a workshop in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties to examine the role that transportation and mobility play in allowing older adults to age in place.

Examples of existing initiatives in place to meet the mobility needs of older Floridians are addressed throughout the report, such as Miami-Dade County’s Golden Passport, a program that allows residents age 65+ to ride buses and rail in the county free of charge.
