Overview

Increasing energy efficiency of existing homes through modest home improvements, called “weatherization,” can dramatically reduce utility costs for homeowners. Low-income families can achieve an annual savings of about 21 percent, or $400 per year, on their energy bills by reducing the energy consumption of their home. To explore this option, AARP has created a fact sheet introducing the health and economic benefits associated with weatherizing homes as well as the challenges related to implementing energy-efficient modifications.

Key Points br

The fact sheet provides an introduction of what weatherization entails and why it is important; the benefits of reducing energy consumption through the process of weatherization; resources for funding energy-efficient modifications; and policy recommendations that tackle the obstacles and barriers of implementing weatherization programs. Other report highlights include:
A recent study showed that almost 29 percent of households with older adult residents had to choose between buying food and paying for heating fuel or utility costs.
Weatherization can help to reduce energy consumption in older housing units, reducing the burden of energy costs while decreasing the environmental footprint and creating healthier living situations for older adults.
The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) offers assistance and funding to lower-income households seeking to take advantage of the benefits of weatherization.
Energy-efficient improvements in households will allow older adults to comfortably age in place with manageable utility costs.

How to Use br

This fact sheet offers a high-level of discussion about weatherization and how to fund efforts that will improve the energy efficiency of existing households. Government officials can use this fact sheet to raise public awareness of weatherization programs and efforts that are available and highlight the benefits on an individual level for residents in the community. Planners can use this weatherization fact sheet when designing new environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient housing developments.
