Overview The population of older adults ages 65 and older is expected to reach over 20 percent of the population by 2030 and exceed the population of children ages 18 and younger by 2035. AARP research indicates that people want to stay in their homes and communities as they age. These demographic changes and stated community preferences present an opportunity for decision makers to take action now to meet the needs of older adults and their families. The Livability Index is a tool that measures the aspects of community life that best support people at any life stage. The Index can help community leaders identify where their strengths are and where gaps exist to create strategies that improve the quality of life for all community members as they age. AARP’s Public Policy Institute presents findings from analysis of new data incorporated into an updated version of the Livability Index and showcases the features and functions of the tool. This event also includes a panel of speakers who discuss their efforts to improve livability in their communities.
