Help CT Students Get Needed School Supplies
This summer, Create the Good is encouraging AARP members and the public to help children succeed in school by donating school supplies or holding their own school supply drives in their communities as part of the SM campaign. An easy-to-follow Toolkit provides step-by-step instructions, helpful tips and even sample communications to help you organize and promote your own drive.
Here in Connecticut, AARP state office staff and volunteers joined the campaign by donating needed supplies and their free time at the Meriden Back to School EXPO and Annual Book Bag Drive Aug. 24. The annual event is organized by the Meriden Beat the Street Community Center, the Meriden/Wallingford branch of NAACP, the Meriden Rotary Club and the Board of Education.
On the evening of Aug. 19, AARP staff and volunteers helped stuff backpacks with donated school supplies collected over the previous weeks. At the Aug. 24 EXPO, AARP volunteers got together again to help hand out the backpacks to more than 1,400 Meriden schoolchildren in grades pre-K through 8th. This is just one example of how the “Equipped to Learn” campaign is helping thousands of schoolchildren across the county start out the school year better-prepared.
