At a time when more than 30 million students receive free and reduced meals at school, many parents are unable to provide basic school supplies.

Families are struggling as unemployment remains high, and teachers typically spend $500-$1,000 of their own money on school supplies due to cuts in education.

But from Aug. 15 to Sept. 10, AARP Colorado and CSPERA will embark on a mission to help teachers, parents and students of at least one inner-city Denver school get the supplies needed so students can do their best in school.

All donations collected during the school supply drive will go to benefit the Denver Street School as part of this year’s Create The Good Day of Service.

Between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. collection bins will be available for donors to drop off school supplies. Supplies may be dropped off at the Denver Street School, 1380 Ammons St. in Lakewood or at AARP's office, 303 E. 17th Ave., Denver.

“We are very excited about this drive to help students, who tend not to fit-in traditional school settings,” said Create the Good Lead Cathy Lasnik. “They are excelling at the Denver Street School and our project will enhance their chances of graduating.”

The school supply drive will help ease the burden from school budget cuts shortfalls with the sole effort of volunteers and donations. Volunteers are needed and encouraged to help their community through resources from AARP’s .

AARP’s sponsorship of the school supply drive also creates a multi-generational approach to volunteerism, in which AARP volunteers can engage with young people, Lasnik said.
