According to a recently released report commissioned by the AARP Foundation, nearly 9 million Americans 50 and older face the risk of hunger, including 8.65 percent of older Arizonans.
During the Day of Service event, volunteers collected over 1600 boxes of food that translated into over 17,000 meals for families at risk of hunger in the Phoenix area.
St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance, the world's first food bank, is a non-sectarian, nonprofit organization that alleviates hunger by efficiently gathering and distributing food to sites that serve the hungry. Serving two-thirds of Arizona's 15 counties, the organization is committed to volunteerism, building community relationships and improving the quality of life for Arizonans in need.
No one of any age should go hungry in the U.S. today. Through Drive to End Hunger, a multi-year effort to raise awareness and address the issue of older adult hunger, AARP Foundation works with national and local hunger relief organizations across the country to help shine a spotlight on the problem.
It costs $8 a day to feed a hungry older person. Working together AARP Foundation and AARP is helping ensure that vulnerable older adults have enough to eat.

Each year AARP designates a Day of Service in which staff and volunteers serve their communities in a variety of ways. This year’s event, held Sept. 9, was held at St. Mary’s Foodbank Alliance in Phoenix in which volunteers helped pack boxes of food for needy families.Drive To End Hunger
