During the week of Sept. 19, Food Stamp Challenge participants will live on the average weekly food stamp benefit of $30 per person.
The Food Stamp Challenge gives participants insight into the challenges associated with food insecurity which many of our fellow Marylanders experience every day. Challenge participants use the average Food Supplement benefit -- $30 per person – as their food budget for one week. They are forced to make difficult shopping choices, and often realize how hard it is to afford nutritious foods, and remain healthy.
“Hunger is a fact of life for many older Americans. By participating in this challenge we hope to shed a light on the challenges facing many Marylanders as well as the millions of older Americans nationwide”, says AARP Maryland Director Hank Greenberg
As households throughout Maryland continue to face economic struggles, the Food Supplement Program serves as a critical resource. According to data collected by Gallup and analyzed by the Food Research and Action Center, one in seven Marylanders reported in the first half of 2010 they had a difficult time affording food at some point in the previous twelve months.
We hope you will join in taking the Second Annual Food Stamp Challenge and help us raise awareness around the importance of providing for the basic needs of low-income Marylanders.
