ServiceNation Summit

A Campaign for a New America

The two-day ServiceNation Summit came to a close Sept. 12 with a call to action. “This summit and the Day of Action on Sept. 27 introduce a yearlong grassroots effort to promote the power and joy of service,” said Caroline Kennedy, vice chair of the New York City Fund for Public Schools.
As a next step, ServiceNation Summit participants were urged to spread the word about the Day of Action on Sept. 27, encouraging Americans to volunteer for one of the thousands of events planned for that day.
President Bush addressed the Summit this morning at the Hilton Hotel in New York and reiterated his call for Americans to give two years or 4,000 hours of service over the course of their lives to help those in need.
The bill provides ways to increase volunteer opportunities for people of all ages, to support innovation in the nonprofit sector, and to improve and expand service at home and abroad.
On the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama took the day off from active presidential campaigning to discuss how Americans can better serve their county.
To help break through people’s apathy and isolation and encourage participation, ServiceNation has enlisted and trained some 30 “Change Agents,” who will reach out to local groups, forge networks and help organize events. At the heart of it all, a Change Agent believes in the power of citizens to change our communities and ultimately our world. Meet six of them.
Despite their pessimism about the direction of the country, Americans between the ages of 44 and 79 are ready and willing to pick up the mantle of volunteerism worn by earlier generations, according to a report released by AARP and Civic Enterprises.
