Retired New Mexico Retired Educators Donate $896,000 Worth of Volunteer Community Service AARP - NRTA Live & Learn
NMAER volunteers served the older adults in their community by working with organizations such as Meals on Wheels and driving seniors to the grocery store and doctors' ppointments. Others earned community service hours while working with youth in classrooms, serving as court-appointed special advocates for children, tutoring, and raising funds for scholarships.
I receive similar reports from REAs nationwide about how their members stay active through volunteerism. In each case it shows how educators continue to help others long after they leave the classroom—and what gifts those retirees are to our communities!
With best regards, Megan

Report from NRTA
Look how retired educators across the country stay active and continue to serve their communities
Welcome to Live & Learn online! NRTA: AARP’s Educator Community is proud of our nationwide network of Retired Educator Associations (REAs) and their ongoing commitment to community service. That fact was reinforced recently when I received information from the New Mexico Association of Educational Retirees (NMAER) that their members contributed more than $896,000 worth of volunteer hours this year. That figure is based on almost 46,000 hours at the current value of $19.51 per volunteer hour (from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).NMAER volunteers served the older adults in their community by working with organizations such as Meals on Wheels and driving seniors to the grocery store and doctors' ppointments. Others earned community service hours while working with youth in classrooms, serving as court-appointed special advocates for children, tutoring, and raising funds for scholarships.
