Fostering a love of reading in Vermont’s students since 2000 Everybody Wins! Vermont is a literacy mentoring organization operating in 21 schools. Since 2000, EW! VT has been recruiting, training, and supporting community volunteers who come into their local school weekly during lunch to share books and friendship with a child. There are currently over 580 Everybody Wins! Vermont mentors, making it the largest mentoring program in the state. Last year, these amazing volunteers donated 12,500 hours of their time to their local schools.

EW! VT mentors came from all walks of life and bring a wealth of enthusiasm and wisdom to their “mentees.” Among them are police officers, reporters, farmers, insurance agents, teachers, lawyers, school superintendents, bus drivers, small business owners, and state legislators. AARP Vermont has supported the organization in several ways over the years—from recruiting members to volunteer, to serving on the VT EW! board and assisting with fund-raising appeals. AARP Vermont staff members in Burlington are reading mentors as well! “I’ve been reading to a child on my lunch hour once a week for the past 7 school years and it’s really a lot of fun,” said Dave Reville of the AARP Vermont State Office. “We both look forward to getting together each week, sharing the latest news and reading a few chapters. It’s the highlight of my day!”

Many retired and working Vermonters have found the Everybody Wins! experience to be a well-organized volunteer opportunity that keeps them in touch with their local school and energized by a new young friend!

It is not too late to be matched with a child and begin Power Lunch sessions this school year. EW! VT mentors spend one lunch hour per week reading with one child at their school. The mentors provide the inspiration to help a child develop a love of reading that will last a lifetime, and EW! VT provides the books and support to all mentors.
