AARP Illinois participated as a member of the NGA team and helped give rise to the newest initiative of the group, Generations Serving Generations. As older adults live longer and healthier lives, the gap between generations closes and people of all ages have more opportunities to work together to bring about social change through civic engagement. Here is where Generations Serving Generations comes in—focusing on building intergenerational bonds among age groups. What are the goals of Generations Serving Generations? Increase participation in service by uncovering talents, matching individuals with suitable opportunities and offering guidance. Highlight the importance of each person’s contribution, recognize achievements and publicize the ways generations support each other. Preserve history by gathering stories from older citizens. Promote healthy lifestyles. Demonstrate how older Illinoisans help to strengthen the economy. In 2009, Governor Quinn proclaimed 2010 as the “Year of the Engaged Older Adult” in Illinois and Generations Serving Generations will use that proclamation to launch a year-long civic engagement effort with monthly themes. You can visit the website to find out the themes for each month. Everyone is invited to participate and there are many ways to become a part of this initiative.
