The AARP Conway Chapter is woven into the fabric of the community in myriad ways that benefit local residents. In addition to making donations to seven community organizations such as the Red Cross, the Interfaith Clinic and the Women’s Shelter, the chapter volunteers assist with the Annual Toad Suck Dinner, a successful fundraiser for the local Senior Center.

“Many AARP members attend the Center for the daily activities and volunteer there in various ways,” said Joyce Lancaster, chapter board member. They help serve lunch, donate prizes for the weekly Bingo games, serve on the Site Advisory Council and on the Board of Directors.

A couple of other fortunate community groups which reap the benefits of AARP volunteerism are the Conway Regional Medical Center (most AARP volunteer hourse logged at Med Ctr) and the Faulkner County library. Volunteers serve as bus drivers, receptionists and retail clerks at the medical center. At the library, they provide expert, volunteer manpower for two annual book sales.

One of the chapter’s most visible activities is with the Arkansas Educational Television Network, which has its studio in Conway. AARP members have volunteered for political debates, fundraising telethons and other programs.

At First United Methodist Church, members serve on the Older Adult Council and work diligently at the monthly potluck meeting of the church seniors. Members also donate food to the church’s food pantry. Our potlucks and picnics are held in the church Fellowship Hall. “We think of ourselves as an extension of the community, and we like to help out whenever we can,” said Joyce Heird, AARP Conway chapter president.
