Create the Good is AARP’s way of connecting members and the public to volunteer opportunities in their areas and with information and resources such as “how to” toolkits. AARP founder Ethel Percy Andrus encouraged Americans to give back and do things for others. As Baby Boomers age, more people will find their time, and experience, add a level of reward and fulfillment in their retirement years; and add tremendous value back into their communities by utilizing their skills. AARP’s Create the Good website, , allows visitors to input their zip code to find lists of volunteer opportunities close to home. Or visitors can list an area they would like to volunteer in, such as hunger, and find opportunities to help at food banks or serve lunch at local shelters. In addition, the website has several dozen toolkits available for downloading that provide information about how to start a walking program, talk to neighbors about energy efficiency, assist people in keeping track of medications, and help family, friends and neighbors in dozens of ways. The website also is a great place to go for organizations wanting to post volunteer opportunities and connect with volunteers in their communities or statewide. AARP’s annual Day of Service is Tuesday, September 14. It’s not too early to begin thinking about what you, your friends, your organizations, your community can do to contribute. Whether it takes five minutes, five hours or five days your time will mean a lot to those you serve. Be sure to visit www.createthegood.org to find an opportunity or to create one.
