A Legacy of Service Over 50 years ago, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, founded AARP with the motto, “To serve, not to be served.” Today, AARP continues to honor our founder by connecting our members and engaging them and their networks in a wide range of opportunities to serve others. More than 9 million people give back Association-wide through AARP’s volunteer donor and activist networks.
With a lifetime of skills experience and wisdom, boomers and older Americans have much to contribute. Four in ten say they want to help even more than they do now. As our nation faces growing challenges, AARP has launched , a network of people who want to make a difference. Members are connecting with each other, finding new and different ways to give back on their time, and helping others in their community and beyond. What is Create The Good? expands on traditional, scheduled ways to volunteer by exploring simple steps, time-flexible opportunities, and a wide variety of different ways to get involved. The website features free downloadable toolkits to organize a group activity or simply help out a neighbor or friend in need. How Can I Create The Good? • Download the free Operation Energy Save toolkit to weatherize homes in your community;
• Use your financial skills to help people in need prepare their taxes;
• Teach a driver safety course to help keep our streets safe;
• Start a walking group with your friends to stay healthy;
• Write a letter to your elected officials about an issue that is important to you and your family;
• Assess a neighbor’s home for safety concerns with our handy checklists;
• Help a jobseeker assess their skills, update their resume, and prepare for interviews; or
• Use our tools to help someone in need file for benefits, save on prescription drug costs or plan for their retirement needs. Whether people have five minutes, or five hours, Create The Good’s community of people who care are responding with key resources to help improve our neighborhoods and communities. In Connecticut, members teamed up in May with FoodShare, the heart of Connecticut’s fight against hunger in Hartford and Tolland counties, by participating in a Walk for Hunger Fundraiser on May 3 and helping out for a few hours to sort groceries at FoodShare’s headquarters in Bloomfield on May 14. AARP members in Connecticut also helped “Create The Good” on September 11, AARP’s nationally-designated Day of Service, by collecting and donating canned goods and other non-perishable items for local food banks.
