AARP Oklahoma Volunteer State President Marjorie Lyons has a message for all members in the state: get involved in 2010. Lyons recently taped a video message that can be viewed on YouTube. About two years ago, AARP Oklahoma started a grassroots team of volunteers that was named the 770 Team. The name stems from the goal of recruiting at least 10 volunteers in each of Oklahoma’s 77 counties. So far, there are more than 400 people who have joined the 770 Team, Lyons said adding that there is always room for more volunteers. “Volunteers are the backbone of what we do as an organization,” she says. “The more people who get involved, the louder our collective voice can be as we work on issues of critical importance to older Oklahomans from the state house to the U.S. Capitol.” 770 Team members receive ‘real time’ communications both via e-mail and traditional mail. They also participate in monthly update telephone conference calls with the AARP Oklahoma state staff and from time to time are called upon to make telephone calls to legislators and even attend events. “I think what makes the 770 Team so unique is the level of opportunity to get involved,” Lyons said. “From simply receiving information to actually attending meetings and talking to elected officials, AARP members in Oklahoma have the chance to be as involved as their schedule permits.” Lyons urges everyone interested in joining the 770 Team to or to call the state office at 1-866-295-7277.
